Week 6 - Product Portfolio

Week 5 - Materials and Fasteners

To be honest, I had a hard time ideating for this week’s project. Finding two different materials that would work with my theme was not easy. Also, I already had a lot of materials so I wanted to use what I had in mind.

I decided to make a fruit bowl, spray paint it and draw flowers on it. The structure is made with wires I got from Amazon. The wires also work as a fastener because it holds up the bowl. Then, I covered the wires with air-dry clay.

I didn’t like how the clay looked at the end. Air-dry clay is definitely not a guide material to work with. Even though I covered it multiple layers, it kept cracking up.

I decided to try something else because I had some wood left. But once again, I had difficulties cutting thin layers. I had flower tubes left from last week and I wanted to recreate this design that I found on Pinterest. The tube works as a fastener in between two slices of wood.

The layer thickness is not equal and it’s driving me crazy. Doing this with plywood and the laser cutter would be much more cleaner and good-looking.

Week 4 - Enclosure

Well, I guess I didn’t understand what enclosure meant until I talked to Dipika about it. I had to change my initial idea. Since I had a lot of acyrilic left from the previous project, I decided to make something colorful, like a small vase.

First, to get some inspiration, I scrolled through Pinterest. I ordered small flower tubes from Amazon. Thought that it might be cute as a decorative piece.

I started with a few different designs by sketching out what I had in mind. Once I settled upon one, I started calculating the dimentions by keeping the height of the tubes that I got.

I turned the designs into an illustrator file and labaled them with letters to understand the sides better. Then, I cut all the pieces and layed them flat to measure and see if everything fits. I couldn’t find the needle tip for the weld-on again! So, I did a really ugly glue job. The top part is movable and the box can be used for different purposes if needed.

Week 3 - Measurement

Homework for this week is to lasercut 2 versions of the same object: one big, one small. I started by designing my flower in illustrator. It was hard to think about different shapes because I wanted to create a structure that would fit into each layer.

The shapes that I needed were as follows:

When the flower was small, the pollen parts were really tiny. Even when it’s big, each piece was so similar that I couldn’t find the right place for them. Overall, it was a hard task.

I’ve never laser cutted acyrilic so I was really excited about that. I had to run the laser cutter at least 2 times to cut the pieces out. After that, I placed the pieces together and used Weld-On to glue them together. (I forgot the term for it but) The gap betwen pieces made the gluing part harder. The needle part of the bottle was also not working so I had the use the big cap. That resulted in weld-on being/spilling everywhere. To make the glue look better, I dabbed a paper towel so that it would feel like a texture. Designing in different sizes is really interesting and requires a different thinking structure.

Week 2 - Repeatability

For this weeks assignment, I decided to make 5 flower shaped candle holders. The base flower will be the same shaped I cut last week. Then, I’ll make a whole inside the circular wood that I bought from Bruno’s. The hole should be slightly bigger than the diameter of the end of the candle.

I started by getting the flower shape out using the band saw. The hard part was to make 5 slices out of it. This is hard because of 2 reasons: your hand gets so close to the blade, and the band saw doesn’t cut straight!

Well, cutting th flower shape first was definitely not the best idea. I was only able to make 2 good-looking slices. Even those had problems. I had to sand them nicely to make the top and bottom straight. Then, I decided to first cut the slices and cut the flower shape individually. The image on the right shows the slices I got from the cubic wood piece. Since I made the flower shape individually, you chould see that they were different from each other once you got close. I used the hand dremmel and also did some hand sanding to even each piece out and make them soft.

The second major problem was to make a hole inside the wood piece so that the candle could fit and stay. I had to secure the circular wood using the clamps but making it so tight caused me troubles. Once the blade reaches the end, the wood would crack because there were a lot of force coming from the sides.

To solve this problem,  -after cracking multiple pieces of wood- I started cutting the pieces longer than it should be. This way, I didn’t have to go fully in with the drill press. Then, I would just cut the excess part out with the band saw. Easy-peasy-ish. It was definitely a trial-error learning process for me. But I’m glad how it turned out!

Finally, I used wood glue to glue the two pieces together and clamped them over-night.I’m not loving how the colors doesn’t match each other. Maybe -if I have time- I’ll spray paint or stein them to give a different feel.

Week 1 - Introduction

I decided to proceed with a flower-related theme. My first idea was to build a flower box. Before hearing the prompt, I wanted to make a lid with two layers that could fit the box. You would take the lid out to open the box. But since we need to use a screw for this homework, the design transformed into something simplier (image below, during class)

First, I draw a circle shape and printed out. After drawing the shape on the wood, I used the band saw to cut out the shape. It was tricky to work with the saw because I had circular vertexes. I would say that the band saw is better with cutting straight.

To get smoother curves, I did a lot of hand-sanding. I used 80, 120, 240, 320, 480, 600-grit, respectively. Now, the overall feel of it is great.

After hours of sanding, it was time to create the box.I cut the lid using the band saw. Then, i used the drill press to carve out the inside. it was not as smooth as the surface, so, i did some hand sanding. again :( Finally, put the screw in and voilà! a flower box! Maybe i should stein it to create a more finished look?
