Week 5: Packaging Design
Okay well, this was the first trial of 3D printing for my dog. As all can see, the ears caused some problems. Me forgetting to click the support button in Ultimaker was a mistake. I should either print it upside down or click that button. But at least, I know now..
Time to fix the model! I worked for a serious amount of time to alter the ears and the overall structure of the dog. This time I tried with the bread. Also, didn’t forget to click the support button. Huge thanks to Kai, who went to Makerspace to help me print it out! The 3D printers are always occupied and nobody respects the papers that people put on them saying that they’re next.
There were still some problems with the model. Sometimes something looks good on Blender but printing it makes a huge difference. Seing something in a 3D environment is completely different from modeling something on a computer. I made more smoother ears, keeping in mind that a slice of bread will be on the face.
I added a tongue aswell. I lost my dog 2 months ago while I was away from her. By adding the tongue, this model made me think of her. So I guess this project turned into something in memory of her. The model is how I want it to be!
Tomorrow it’s 4-axis time! Phil will teach me how to use it and I’ll use the same model. I’ll paint the eyes by hand using aycrilic paint. For the bread part I’ll use a different material and sew it by hand aswell. For the packaging I bought clear plastic sheets. I’ll tie them up as a the bread you buy from stores.
Week 4: Finishes
Mission failed...
I tried both with blender and fusion but couldn’t make an organic melted-octopus part. Since I’m not really good at 3D modeling, it tried one of my other characters to see if it’s doable.

Week 3: Material Choices
Here are all the necessary shapes for my melted octopus.
Doing the simple shapes are easy, as they are “simple” and most of the 3D modeling softwares gives you the tools to build them. But, the free form shape part is hard. So, this week I tried to model my character using Blender.
Then, I met Phil to ask for some help. He introduced me to Fusion 360. The tools it had were more clear and everytime Phil did something it looked so easy. Unfortunately, watching someone do something and trying is so different than eachother.
So what Phil did was creating two different surfaces and revolving one surface into the other one. This would give a more natural look for the “melted” part of my octopus. I couldn’t make it work. Somehow I could only revolve them on an axis, either at x or y-axis.
The idea was to 3D model it - then 3D print it with the scale that I want my art toy to be - and then probably try with different materials. But this modeling part took me more time than I imagined.
Apparently, my computer (Mac) can’t open Ultimaker....
I made it tooooo small!!
First 3D Printing experience was partialy successful. After cleaning the edges, the looked better.
Week 2: Sculpting and Modeling Techniques
A sketch might look good on a 2D world. But, it’s nice to think about the back and other sides of a sketch. Let’s take my Alien Ghost for example, it can be boring when we turn it around. The best way to understand if it works is to sculpt it! For this, I bought air-clay. I can say that it was really meditative to play with clay!!

Week 1: Intros and Character Design
JUXTAPOSITION IS KEY
Bring two things together that doesn’t fit to make your art toy more interesting. I espacially like the example were the toy had a butt hole. So unexpected, so random... and also so funny.
I tried to create my characters with that idea in mind and the sketches are below:
WINTER CLOTHING FOR DOLLS
I had several different ideas for my peg doll. First, I wanted to cut the top off and also carve the inside. Then, make 3 little holes to the top. The first time I saw the peg, I saw a salt/pepper shaker. But, the assigment was to think as if it was a character, not an object.
Then, I had my first visit to Michael’s and bought a couple of colorful fluffy wires and cloth. I initially wanted to make a bomber jacket for my doll. Due to lack of the purple cloth, I was just able to make the arms. At least I made them puffy. So, I sew it by hand.
It was also really interesting to see other people’s dolls. It’s fascinating how everybody interpreted the doll in a different way and created something unique. Even the use of materials was different with everybody.
USING ALUMINIUM FOIL TO SCULPT
I tried to sculpt my melted octopus ice-cream sketch with a.foil. But, as you can see it doesn’t look like that.︎

I feel like the tentacles are missing. I have to wait for the clay to dry out.
Looks cute.
Puppy peeks through a slice of bread
Okay, this is definitely not cute. Hard to recreate the sketch!
- Hard to make super smooth edges.
- Super hard to make eyes.
